It's 3pm. Your energy has dropped, your focus is gone and suddenly the biscuit tin is calling your name. If this happens most days, you're not weak-willed. Afternoon sugar cravings are usually your body's response to what happened earlier in the day.
Why the 3pm slump happens
When you eat a meal that's mostly quick carbohydrates, like white toast, a muffin or a sandwich on white bread, your blood sugar rises quickly and then drops. That drop can leave you tired, foggy and craving something sweet to bring it back up. Add a light breakfast, a rushed lunch and a poor night's sleep, and the afternoon becomes a perfect storm.
Five simple fixes
1. Build a stronger breakfast. Include protein and fibre, such as eggs with wholegrain toast or Greek yoghurt with oats and berries. A good breakfast sets up steadier energy all day.
2. Balance your lunch. Aim for a palm of protein, two handfuls of vegetables or salad, and a small serve of slow carbohydrates like brown rice, legumes or wholegrain bread.
3. Plan a smart afternoon snack. If there's a long gap until dinner, have a snack with protein and fibre. Try an apple with a handful of almonds, hummus with vegie sticks, or a small tub of yoghurt.
4. Drink water. Mild dehydration can feel like tiredness and hunger. Keep a bottle on your desk.
5. Move for five minutes. A short walk around the block or up and down the stairs can lift your energy more than sugar does.
Fibre is your secret weapon
Fibre slows the release of sugar into your blood, which smooths out the highs and lows. Most Australians don't eat enough of it. My post on how much fibre you need per day explains how to get more, and the free Fiber Counter app helps you keep track.
When cravings are about more than food
Sometimes the afternoon treat is about a break, boredom or stress rather than hunger. That's completely normal. It helps to ask yourself, "What do I actually need right now?" Sometimes it's food. Sometimes it's ten minutes outside or a cup of tea away from your desk.
