Weight Loss Coach Melbourne: Why Women Over 40 Need a Different Approach

If you're a woman in your 40s or beyond and you've noticed that losing weight feels nothing like it used to, you're not imagining it. Most of the women who come to me for weight loss coaching in Melbourne tell me the same story: the things that worked in their 20s and 30s simply don't work anymore, and they're not sure why.

I'm Katie Larking, a qualified Health and Nutrition Coach based in Langwarrin on the Mornington Peninsula. I coach women over 40 online across Australia and in person around Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula. In this article I want to explain, honestly and without hype, why weight loss genuinely does feel different after 40, and why a weight loss coach Melbourne women can trust often needs to take a very different approach.

Why weight loss feels harder after 40

Weight management in midlife is rarely about willpower. It's about a whole set of changes happening at once, and most of them are completely outside your control.

    Perimenopause and menopause changes

As you move through perimenopause and into menopause, shifting hormone levels can change where your body tends to store fat, how hungry or full you feel, and how easily you maintain muscle. These changes are normal, but they do mean the approach that worked a decade ago often needs adjusting.

    Muscle loss

From around your 30s onwards, you can naturally lose muscle if you're not actively working to maintain it. Because muscle uses energy, less muscle can mean your body uses fewer calories at rest. This is one reason the same meals and the same activity can start to produce different results over time.

    Sleep, stress and gut health

Poor sleep and ongoing stress can both influence appetite, cravings and the choices you make around food. Digestive health and constipation can also play a role in how comfortable and energised you feel day to day, which in turn affects your motivation to stay consistent. None of these are character flaws. They're real factors that deserve real attention.

    Why generic diets stop working

Generic diets are built for an average person who doesn't really exist. They assume a certain schedule, a certain appetite, a certain starting point. When your body is changing, a rigid plan that ignores those changes is almost guaranteed to feel like a fight.

This is why so many women tell me they've "tried everything." In my experience, they haven't failed. The plans simply weren't designed for where they are now. If you're not sure what's been getting in your way, my free Weight Loss Quiz is a good place to start before booking a session.

What a weight loss coach actually does

A genuine weight loss coach isn't there to hand you a meal plan and weigh you in. The role is to help you understand the eating habits, lifestyle factors and behaviours that are quietly working against you, and then build realistic changes you can actually maintain.

    Coach versus dietitian

A dietitian is university-trained and regulated, and can provide medical nutrition therapy for diagnosed conditions. As a nutrition coach, I focus on lifestyle-based education, habit change and general wellbeing support. I don't diagnose or treat medical conditions, and if something in our conversation suggests you need clinical care, I'll always point you toward your GP or a dietitian. Many women benefit from both at different times.

    Coach versus a gym program

A gym program focuses on movement and training, which matters, but it rarely addresses the eating patterns, stress, sleep and habits that drive most weight struggles. Coaching looks at the whole picture, not just the exercise part.

What working with me looks like, step by step

I keep the process simple and low pressure. There's no long-term lock-in before you've even had a conversation.

    1. Discovery call. A free 15-minute chat so we can talk about your goals and whether coaching is the right next step for you.
    2. 60-minute consultation. We look at your current eating patterns, lifestyle, energy, sleep and stress, and what you'd realistically like to change.
    3. Personalised plan. You leave with practical, written guidance built around your actual life, not a generic template.
    4. Follow-ups. 30-minute check-ins to review progress, troubleshoot and adjust as life happens.
    5. Optional Smart DNA. Where appropriate, we can add genetic insights as another piece of the puzzle. You can read more about that in my article on DNA testing for weight loss in Australia.

Online or in person across Melbourne, Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula

I'm based in Langwarrin and offer in-person coaching around Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula. I also work with women online across all of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia and New Zealand. Online sessions mean coaching fits around your schedule wherever you are, with no travel required.

How to choose the right coach

Before you book with anyone, it's worth checking a few things:

    • Real qualifications. Look for a genuine certification or degree, not a self-assigned title.
    • An evidence-based approach. Be cautious of anyone promising fast, guaranteed results.
    • Genuine personalisation. Ask what a session actually involves. A generic PDF is not personalised coaching.
    • Honesty about scope. A good coach refers you to a GP or dietitian when something needs clinical attention.
    • A supportive, non-judgemental style. You should feel comfortable, not judged.

    Frequently asked questions

How much does a weight loss coach cost in Melbourne?

My personalised coaching is $200 + GST for a 60-minute consultation and $100 + GST for a 30-minute follow-up. Sessions are online, so you can access support from anywhere in Melbourne and across Australia and New Zealand.

Do you offer online weight loss coaching?

Yes. All of my sessions are delivered online, so you can work with me from anywhere in Melbourne, Victoria, across Australia and in New Zealand without needing to travel.

Can you help with weight gain during menopause?

Many women I work with are navigating menopause and the changes that can come with it, including shifts in weight. My role is to help you understand the nutrition and lifestyle factors that may be influencing things and develop a personalised approach. I do not diagnose or treat medical conditions, and coaching complements the care you receive from your GP.

Is this a diet or meal plan?

No. This is not a generic diet or a rigid meal plan. It is personalised coaching that looks at your goals, habits and circumstances, with practical guidance and meal planning guidance where appropriate that you can sustain long term.

Do I need a GP referral?

No referral is needed to book a session. My coaching complements, rather than replaces, advice from your GP or other health professionals, and I will always encourage you to speak with them about any medical concerns.

If you're ready for an approach built around you, not another generic template, I'd love to help. Book a free 15-minute discovery call or take the free weight loss quiz below to get started.
