How to Choose a Nutrition Coach in Melbourne: 6 Things to Check

Melbourne has no shortage of nutrition coaches, personal trainers offering nutrition add-ons, dietitians, and naturopaths, and it's genuinely hard to know who's the right fit. Here's what's worth checking before you book.

    1. Actual qualifications

"Nutrition coach" isn't a protected title in Australia the way "Accredited Practising Dietitian" is, which means the qualification behind the label can vary a lot. Look for a genuine qualification, such as a Nutrition Coach certification or Health Promotion degree, rather than a title that was self-assigned after a short online course.

    2. Whether they work from evidence, not trends

Be cautious of anyone promising dramatic results from a single supplement, detox, or extreme protocol. A credible coach will talk in terms of evidence-tiered guidance and honest trade-offs, not guaranteed transformations.

    3. Whether the approach is genuinely personalised

Ask what a session actually involves. If the answer is a generic PDF meal plan handed to every client regardless of their history, that's not personalised nutrition coaching, that's a template with your name on it.

    4. How they handle things outside their scope

A good coach should be upfront about what they can't help with, and refer you to a GP or dietitian when something needs clinical attention. Be wary of anyone who claims to treat or diagnose medical conditions without the qualifications to do so.

    5. Whether you feel comfortable, not judged

Nutrition and body image can be sensitive territory, particularly if you've struggled with your relationship with food before. The right coach for you is someone whose approach feels supportive rather than shame-based, since judgement rarely drives lasting change.

    6. What's actually included in the price

Compare what you're getting, not just the headline price. A written plan you take home is worth more than verbal advice you have to remember. Check whether follow-up support is included or an extra cost, and whether you're being asked to commit to a long package before you've even had a first conversation. See how much it costs for more details.
