If you find yourself raiding the pantry an hour after lunch, you're not alone. Many women tell me their appetite changed somewhere in their 40s, and the old habits that used to keep them going suddenly don't. The good news is that constant hunger usually has a cause you can work with. Here are six of the most common reasons, and what tends to help.
1. Your meals are light on protein
Protein is the most filling of the three macronutrients. It slows digestion and supports the hormones that tell your brain you've had enough. A breakfast of toast and coffee, or a salad with no real protein source, often leaves you hungry again within a couple of hours.
What helps: aim for a palm-sized serve of protein at every meal, such as eggs, Greek yoghurt, fish, chicken, tofu or legumes. If you'd like to know how much you need, read How Much Protein Do Women Over 40 Need to Lose Weight?.
2. You're not eating enough fibre
Fibre adds bulk to meals and slows the release of sugar into your bloodstream, so you stay satisfied for longer. Most Australians fall well short of the recommended amount.
What helps: build meals around vegetables, legumes, whole grains, nuts and seeds. My guide to how much fibre you need per day explains simple ways to close the gap, and the free Fiber Counter app makes it easy to track.
3. Blood sugar swings
Meals high in refined carbohydrates can cause a quick rise in blood sugar followed by a dip. That dip often shows up as a sudden, urgent need to eat something sweet.
What helps: pair carbohydrates with protein, fibre and a little healthy fat. If the 3pm slump is your main struggle, this article on afternoon sugar cravings walks through it step by step.
4. Poor or short sleep
Even one or two nights of broken sleep can shift the hormones that control appetite, nudging hunger up and fullness down. Night sweats and early waking are common in perimenopause, which makes this a big one for women over 40.
What helps: keep a regular bedtime, limit caffeine after midday and keep alcohol to a minimum, as both can disrupt sleep quality.
5. Changing hormones
As oestrogen fluctuates and then declines, many women notice changes in appetite, cravings and where they store fat. This is a normal part of midlife, but it does mean the way you ate at 30 may no longer suit you.
What helps: focus on regular, balanced meals rather than skipping meals and over-eating later. Strength training also supports muscle and metabolism through this stage.
6. You're mistaking other signals for hunger
Thirst, tiredness, boredom and stress can all feel like hunger. If you're eating while scrolling or at the end of a long day, it's worth pausing to check what you actually need.
What helps: drink a glass of water first, and ask yourself whether you'd happily eat a plain meal right now. If the answer is no, it may not be physical hunger.

Does menopause make you hungrier?
Many women notice appetite changes during perimenopause and menopause as hormone levels shift and sleep is disrupted. Regular balanced meals and good sleep habits can help.
